Matthew Farrer found an article in a book of essays on Stephen King for me to read. This article deals with how King creates rhythm in his stories. I've read it, and it's got some really thought provoking stuff. In fact, I've started to read a few others in the book. The article brought many ideas into my mind, but the one I want to talk about at the moment is objectivity and subjectivity.

There are many words I like the sound of, really enjoy saying out loud, that offend and hurt people. I was once quite addicted to the word “spaz.” When it was pointed out to me (I was young) what it actually meant and how it could hurt other people I tried really hard not to use anymore.

My agent (and my editors), if you can get them to open up after a vino or 3, will admit that most books are rejected on the first page. Not all, mind you, but probably 90% of them. Maybe more.
